American Electric Power (AEP; Columbus, Ohio, U.S.) and Duke Energy (Charlotte, North Carolina, U.S.) have formed a 50-50 wholly owned joint venture to build and operate 240 miles (386 km) of extra-high-voltage 765-kV transmission lines and related facilities in Indiana, U.S. The project, called Pioneer Transmission, would link Duke Energy's Greentown Substation, near Kokomo, Indiana, with AEP's Rockport Generating Station, east of Evansville, Indiana.

AEP and Duke Energy will submit the Pioneer Transmission proposal to PJM Interconnection and the Midwestern Independent System Operator (MISO) for consideration in their electric transmission expansion plans later this year. The joint venture will operate in Indiana as a transmission utility and is currently seeking rate approval for the project from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.

Since this project would benefit both MISO and PJM, it is anticipated that the cost — estimated at US$1 billion — would be allocated to both MISO customers (in 15 states and Manitoba, Canada) and PJM customers (in 13 states and the District of Columbia).
