Egypt to Provide Lebanon With Power Via Jordan, Syria
Lebanon has reached an agreement to acquire electricity from Egypt via Jordan and Syria, daily newspaper The Jordan Times reported on Tuesday.
Visiting Lebanese Minister of Energy and Water Resources Alain Tabourian revealed the agreement at a press conference in Amman Monday, according to the report.
Under the agreement, Egypt is scheduled to transfer around 450 MW of electricity to Lebanon daily for one-year term, Tabourian was quoted as saying.
A Lebanese work team will visit Egypt to discuss the cost, Tabourian said.
Lebanon has been suffering from a shortage of electric power and its production capacity is well short of its needs.
It had earlier asked Egypt, Syria and Jordan, which constitute part of the joint-electric grid project also connecting Iraq, Libya and Turkey, to provide it with electric power.
During last week's ministerial meeting, Jordan also promised to provide Lebanon with 50 to 70 MW electric power on daily basis up to the end of 2009.
