Midwest ISO Leads Association of Twelve Largest International Power Grid Operators

The Midwest Independent Transmission System Operator (Midwest ISO) this week hosted the Very Large Power Grid Operators (VLPGO), an association of the 12 largest international power grid operators representing more than 60 percent of the world's transmission grids, in Washington, D.C.

The event, held at Washington, D.C.'s Hay-Adams Hotel, brought the association together to formalize the VLPGO's positions on the key issues faced by the operators of very large power grids during a three-day conference.

Midwest ISO CEO and President John R. Bear stated, "As diverse as we are, the issues are very common: aging infrastructure, infrastructure development and investment, integration of renewables, environmental issues, developing a smarter grid. Our vision is to be a leader and catalyst in the transition of the electric power industry to the power grid of the 21st century."

Bear was appointed as VLPGO's president for a one-year term and will lead the VLPGO during a crucial period for the energy industry. Renewable energy integration, evolving energy markets, substantial transmission expansion needs, increases in distributed generation and evolving government policies confront each member.

Bear said, "We will focus the association's efforts on addressing common challenges by sharing best practices, developing joint action plans and maintaining an industry-wide focus on these issues." The VLPGO aims to play a role in supporting decisions made regarding electricity transmission and accelerating the deployment and use of new technologies and strategies.

VLPGO membership includes representatives from SO for UPS (Russia), ONS (Brazil), TERNA SpA (Italy), Red Electrica de Espana, S.A.U. (Spain), Tokyo Electric Power Company (Japan), KPX (Korea), RTE (France), State Grid Corporation of China (China), National Grid (Great Britain), Power Grid Corporation of India (India), PJM (Pennsylvania), and Midwest ISO.
