CL&P Energizes 345-kV Line
Connecticut Light and Power Co. (CL&P), part of the Northeast Utilities System, has energized the new Bethel-to-Norwalk 345-kV transmission line. The line, spanning 21 miles (34 km), connects CL&P's largest load center, southwest Connecticut, to the region's existing 345-kV energy backbone and allows an additional 600 MW of electricity to be delivered to the region.
The US$350 million project came in under budget by about $10 million and ahead of schedule, and uses state-of-the-art technology such as gas-insulated system substation that reduced land space to meet site limitations. For the project, the CL&P also installed one of the longest lengths of 345-kV solid underground cable in the United States.
Transmission & Distribution World covered details of the project in the April and May 2006 issues and will provide an article on the project management of the Middleton-Norwalk project in the February 2007 issue.
