France: RTE Awards ABB Contract to Stabilize Power Grid in France
RTE, the French transmission system operator, awarded ABB a turnkey contract worth $15 million to install Flexible Alternating Current Transmission Systems (FACTS) technology in France.
The contract will improve the efficiency of the transmission system and increase grid reliability in northwestern France, ensuring the voltage stability in the region.
“Our FACTS technology is in strong demand by utilities which are stabilizing grid systems and prevent blackouts,” says Peter Smits, head of ABB Power Technologies division. “FACTS stabilizes voltage and increases the capacity of existing transmission networks.”
The order includes ABB's Static Var Compensator (SVC) technology, part of the FACTS portfolio, which helps to stabilize power grids. Under the latest contract in France, two SVCs will be located in Bretagne, close to the cities of Saint Brieu and Lorient.
