Norris Public Power Completes 69-kV Transmission Construction on Schedule
Norris Public Power District (NPPD; Beatrice, Nebraska, U.S.) began construction of 9 miles (14 km) of 69-kV transmission construction in September 2003. It consisted of horizontal post construction with 4/0 T2 ACSR conductor and direct-buried, two-piece steel poles. A 3/8-inch (1-cm) high-strength guystrand was used for the static wire.
NPPD crews preferred to use 175 of Rainbow Technology's 7 cubic feet Pole Setting Foam Kits from Kriz-Davis Co. (Omaha, Nebraska) to direct bury poles, because of the extra equipment that would be required to rock and tamp the poles in place. The foam was also top on the list because of its efficiency. It reached 50% of full strength in about 3 minutes, allowing hardware to be strung in 15 minutes. The foam has a minimum compressive strength of 75 psi, which is three times greater than that of properly tamped native soil. The engineering staff precalculated the amount of foam they needed based on the hole depth, hole diameter (auger diameter) and butt diameter. The predetermined sizing lowered the job construction costs, saving hundreds of dollars.
NPPD crews completed the job on schedule, with the weather cooperating throughout the construction period.
