Siemens Power Transmission and Distribution (PTD; Erlangen, Germany) has received an order from the China Southern Power Grid Co. in Guangzhou to construct an additional high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission link in southeast China, in partnership with local companies. The new HVDC transmission line, “Guizhou-Guangdong II,” will eventually provide for low-loss transmission of 3000 MW of electricity from the hydro and coal-fired power plants in the west of the country to the industrial centers of Guangdong Province some 1225 km (761 miles) away.

Siemens built China's other three HVDC transmission systems. The new project — rated for 3000 MW at ±500-kV dc — links a converter station in Xingren (Guizhou Province) with the station in Shenzhen (Guangdong Province) via a 1225-km long overhead transmission line. Siemens is not only supplying the HVDC technology, the converter transformers and other key components for the project, but is also responsible for the entire engineering and installation supervision package.
