Spain Commissions 400-kV XLPE Cable System
On Feb. 12, 2004, the commissioning tests on site of Spain's first 400-kV XLPE cable system were completed successfully. It was supplied and installed by Germany's leading extra-high-voltage (EHV) cable manufacturer SÜDKABEL, formerly ABB Energiekabel GmbH.
With a system length of approximately 13 km (8 miles), it is Europe's second largest 400-kV cable route and one of the longest accessible cable tunnels in the world. It replaces an overhead line of 1720 MVA transmission capacity that had to be removed because of the extension of the Madrid Barajas Airport, which is currently one of Europe's largest infrastructure projects.
The cable system was put into commercial operation on February 27, forming an important part of the Spanish transmission grid.
