Wind-Driven Cleaning Rings Help Prevent Insulator Flashovers

According to statistics, insulator flashovers caused by contamination are the second most prevalent type of transmission line incidents next to lightning strikes. However, contamination flashovers cause 10 times more damage than lightning strikes, and manual maintenance is time consuming and costly.

As a result, Yun Cheng Power Supply Co. has created and patented wind-driven cleaning rings that automatically clean contamination on the surface of insulators. When the wind blows, the cleaning rings turn. The edges of the cleaning bowls continuously scrape off the dirt on the surface of the insulator to keep it clean and prevent contamination flashover faults. The cleaning rings are made of light insulating material.

Compared with present technology, using the cleaning rings has the following advantages:

  • The moment the wind blows, the rings clean insulator dirt. Thus, the surface of the insulator cannot accumulate contamination that would lead to flashover faults.

  • Manual cleaning is reduced or avoided, saving manpower and material resources.

  • The rings help avoid safety issues caused by other cleaning methods.

  • Power outages are greatly reduced.
