THE 2006 INTERNATIONAL LINEMAN'S RODEO WILL TRULY BE A WORLDWIDE EVENT as three linemen from different countries unite to compete as one team. Kansas City Power & Light (KCP&L; Kansas City, Missouri, U.S.), one of the host utilities of the rodeo, will be sponsoring the three-person team, comprised of linemen from England, Ireland and the United States. Instead of representing their companies, this team will be representing their countries.

This is one of hundreds of teams, as well as apprentices, expected to compete in this year's rodeo. The 23rd Annual International Lineman's Rodeo and Expo will be held Oct. 5-7 in the Kansas City metro area. Cohosting the three-day event with KCP&L is Westar Energy (Topeka, Kansas, U.S.).

The Lineman's Rodeo attracts the best linemen from around the world to compete in events based on traditional lineman tasks and skills. Journeyman teams will compete in the hurtman rescue, pole climb and two mystery events. Each team consists of three members: a ground man and two linemen. Apprentices will compete against one another in the hurtman rescue, the pole climb, a mystery event, CPR and a written test.

Events will be judged on safety, work practices, neatness and ability, equipment handling and timely completion of the event. Rodeo entry forms and fees are due by Sept. 1, 2006. Names of participants may be added or changed up to Sept. 29; after this date, any changes will need to be handled on-site at registration.

The International Lineman's Rodeo is committed to promoting work safe practices along with introducing new safety techniques, tools and equipment at the expo that help improve the safe performance of line work. This year, attendees may also participate in a free conference on safety, being held for a half day on Thursday morning, Oct. 5. Attendees will hear from industry safety experts on topics such as pole top rescue, new CPR guidelines, fire-resistant clothing and personal commitments to safety.
