IEEE PES Launches Career Website to Address Critical Worker Shortage
The IEEE Power Engineering Society has created a career website (www.PES-Careers.org) that allows engineering students in the United States and Canada to search for and find power engineering positions or internships. The PES-Careers site also has been designed to assist employers in finding the best candidates for current job openings in their companies. Employers can use PES-Careers to promote and enhance their own recruiting methods rather than having to adopt an entirely new system. Faculty at U.S. and Canadian universities and engineering technology schools are encouraged to use the new site to better understand the current job market for their students.
On the website, students can upload and submit résumés to employers, enter a personal profile that describes their skills and career preferences, review job postings, learn about organizations that are in search of power engineering students and contact potential employers. In addition, students can receive instant notification of new job opportunities.
For employers, the PES-Careers site allows them to post job openings, profile their companies, search student résumés and profiles, and communicate with potential job candidates. Using selected screening criteria built into the website, employers can better manage the volume of contacts for job opportunities.
One such employer already using the new site is Southern Company. Tom McNeal, who is in talent acquisition with Southern Co., says, “I work with many posting sites, but the trend is to work with niche sites that target exactly what it is you are looking for. Given our focus is on electrical and power system engineers, we could not be happier with PES-Careers.” Employers have found that the new IEEE PES service works. “The PES-Careers site has been a productive source of job candidates with some 16 applications for one job posting alone,” notes Brian Tighe, a recruiting specialist with the New York ISO.
