Indian Executives Learn from U.S. Utility
Under the India Energy Partnership Program II, funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), six executives from North Delhi Power Ltd. (NDPL) met with Tacoma Power (Tacoma, Washington, U.S.) staff from June 5-9, 2006. Discussions centered on network planning, operation and maintenance philosophy, with the key underlying objective of understanding how the consumer is not subjected to service interruptions, even during preventive maintenance.
Tacoma Power and NDPL reviewed maintenance procedures in great detail, particularly regarding transformers. Tacoma Power performs major transformer maintenance every 20 years, which includes replacing gaskets, fixing radiator leaks, conducting internal inspections, replacing all oil, and testing the bushings and the vacuum process to remove moisture. NDPL executives expressed interested in the vacuum process, especially after Tacoma Power stated that the vacuum moisture removal improves the insulation in particular.
The NDPL delegation also spent time in the field watching crews and visited Tacoma Power's training facility.
