Building a Smarter Grid: Renewable Energy Transmission Technologies
Sponsored by ABB
Today’s growing emphasis on renewable energies has prompted much discussion about how these alternative electricity sources can be transported from remote wind or solar farms to the population centers that need the energy. Martin Gross, ABB’s Head of Power Systems division in North America, discusses emerging Smart Grid technologies, such as FACTS devices – which address the need for reactive power necessary for bringing more renewable energy online – and “HVDC Light” – small DC cables that are easily buried underground or undersea, even in sensitive environmental areas – that enhance renewable energy transmission and distribution.
