Energex has commenced a $6 million upgrade of the existing Darra Substation, boosting power supplies to around 2,000 homes and businesses in Brisbane’s western suburbs.
The project includes an upgrade of the electrical equipment housed within the Himalaya Street substation, ensuring optimum power supplies and electricity reliability for the region.
Energex Asset Manager, Jonathan Khor, said the upgrade was required to meet the increasing power needs to Darra, Oxley, Richlands, Sumner and Wacol.
“As the local area grows with new businesses and industries, it is essential we ensure ongoing supply to cater for this growth,” he said. “The upgraded substation will result in a more reliable power supply, and importantly it will also allow us to meet the growing electricity needs of large customers in the area, particularly at peak times.”
During construction there will be some heavy vehicle movements around the substation site. Khor thanked the local community for their patience during the upgrades. Weather permitting, the civil works are expected to be completed by May 2013 and the upgraded substation in operation in early 2014.
