Parsons Brinckerhoff, a global infrastructure strategic consulting, engineering and program/construction management organization, has been awarded a contract by Abu Dhabi Transmission & Despatch Co., a subsidiary of Abu Dhabi Water & Electricity Authority, to provide engineering consultancy and site supervision services for the replacement of overhead electric lines with underground cables in the United Arab Emirates.

The project involves replacing existing 400-kV overhead lines between the Bahia and Saadiyat Island grid stations via Yas Island with 400-kV underground cables. Moving the cables underground will allow further development of Saadiyat and Yas islands and enhance the area's aesthetics. The 400-kV XPLE cables will be installed in tunnels for underwater crossings as well as open-dig culverts with manholes. An alternative installation to utilize trough instead of culvert is also under consideration.

PB is providing as-built and site surveys, investigations, preliminary/base design and final design reports required for tender preparation and tendering. The firm will assist with the tender evaluation and contract award process, manage and review all contractor submittals during construction, supervise the construction and provide necessary services during the 24-month warranty period.

The project is scheduled for completion in mid-2015.
