ATC Receives Approval for 138-kV Line in Door County Wisconsin

The Public Service Commission of Wisconsin has approved the application by American Trnsmission Co. (ATC) to build a 138-kV transmission line in Door County. The $24.7 million line will run between the Canal Substation in Sturgeon Bay to the Dunn Road Substation in the Town of Sebastopol, primarily within an established transmission corridor. Construction is expected to begin in summer 2011, with an in-service date of June 2012.

Electricity demand in Door County has been growing at an aggressive rate. The 69-kV transmission system serving the northern portion of Door County is quickly reaching its capacity. In addition, most of the northern portion of the county, being served by a single line, is vulnerable to extended interruption of service if that single line suffered an extended outage. Without reinforcements, this system will be susceptible to facility overloads and unacceptably low voltages. Improvements to the transmission system will provide significant voltage support and provide additional transformation capacity to the northern Door County area.
