ENERGEX’s $14.5 million power upgrade of Brisbane’s inner southern suburbs is complete. More than 15,000 local homes and businesses are benefiting from the upgrade which included linking the Tennyson, Moorooka and Annerley substations via a 33-kV underground cable and other associated works.

The new work bolsters the power supply to suburbs including Moorooka, Yeronga, Tennyson, Dutton Park, Yeerongpilly, Annerley, Fairfield, Tarragindi and Greenslopes.

ENERGEX Network Program Group Manager Kevin Ball said the new upgrades have greatly improved local power reliability and would help meet the growing demand for electricity in the area. “Brisbane’s inner south has seen significant power consumption increases in the past few years and that growth is set to continue,” he said.

“These interconnecting upgrades will allow the three substations to work together to provide more power capacity to the area while providing a more robust supply.

“The new cables will also give ENERGEX technicians more options to reroute and restore power faster should an unexpected interruption occur on the local network.” Ball thanked local residents and motorists for their patience during the necessary upgrades.

The project is part of a record $4 billion-plus five-year capital expenditure program currently being undertaken by ENERGEX. In the 2009-10 financial year ENERGEX is investing around $940 million on upgrades to its electricity network while a further $360 million-plus has been set aside to maintain and operate the network – that’s an overall average of more than $3 million a day.
