LIPA Releases In-House and On-Island Contractor Crews to Assist in Restoration Efforts Due to October Nor’Easter

The Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) released in-house and on-island contractor crews dedicated to LIPA to help restoration efforts in Con-Ed, Central Hudson and NYSEG service territories in New York State, which were battered by the October Nor’Easter at the end of October bringing heavy rain, wind and snow in some areas leaving approximately 400,000 New Yorkers without power.

On Sunday, Oct. 30, 2011, after LIPA completed restoration of approximately 23,000 customers affected by the Nor’Easter, LIPA began sending linemen, tree trim, and support and survey personnel to help local utilities restore power to their customers. The crews were sent as a part of the mutual assistance program where utilities lend aid to each other in times of emergencies.

“As we have had to ask for mutual aid in the past, I am pleased that we are able to be in a position to deploy these LIPA dedicated crews to those areas devastated by the storm.” said LIPA Chief Operating Officer Michael Hervey. “These crews are willing, able and ready to help rebuild and restore power to those customers affected by the Nor’Easter.”

Specific crews deployed:

  • ConEd-98 linemen, 24 tree trim
  • Central Hudson-60 linemen, 40 tree trim
  • NYSEG-36 linemen, 18 tree trim
  • National Grid Massachusettes-68 survey assessment personnel
