Middle Tennessee Electric (MTEMC) officials recently energized a new substation that has increased power reliability for residents and businesses in south Franklin.

“Before this substation was built, we met with the city of Franklin to make sure the new design would meet the future power demands of the very fast growing Goose Creek area,” MTEMC electrical engineer Larry Taylor said.

The substation, which took about a year and approximately $3.5 million to build, will improve system efficiency for approximately 7,000 Middle Tennessee Electric members. “Not only is the city expecting substantial residential growth, city officials are also projecting an additional seven million square feet of commercial space to be built in that part of Williamson County,” Taylor added.

The substation is one point where Middle Tennessee Electric receives electricity from Tennessee Valley Authority power lines. The substation distributes electricity through a network of breakers, transformers and power lines to MTEMC members. Middle Tennessee Electric serves more than 180,000 residential and business members in Cannon, Rutherford, and Williamson and Wilson counties. It is the sixth largest electric cooperative in the nation.
