The Alberta Utilities Commission, the regulating body covering Alberta's energy industry, approved construction of the Heartland Transmission Project, along the East Transportation Utility Corridor (TUC) route with overhead power lines. The project will include the use of monopoles along a 9.5-km stretch in the TUC.

"The Heartland Project Team appreciates the contribution of the many stakeholders who have been involved with the project during the past few years," said Guy Bridgeman, EPCOR Senior Vice-President, Strategic Development and Planning, and spokesman for the Heartland Transmission Project. "We will now take some time to go through the decision, and expect to begin construction as early as December."

The proposed Heartland Transmission Project involves the construction of a double circuit 500-kV transmission line, which will connect the Heartland region (northeast of Fort Saskatchewan) to existing 500-kV transmission facilities. AltaLink and EPCOR, the Heartland Project Team, are working together on the project's development. The Heartland Transmission Project has been identified by the Province as critical infrastructure.
