AREVA to Supply Converter Stations for South Korea HVDC Scheme

AREVA’s Transmission and Distribution division has won an order worth over €80 million from KEPCO, the South Korean utility, to supply the converter stations for a 400-MW High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) bipole scheme linking South Korea’s Jeju Island with the mainland. The converter stations will transform alternating current into direct current, connecting the island to the mainland.

AREVA will provide the overall system design, network studies and detailed engineering solution for the HVDC scheme. This will work in conjunction with the existing 300-MW HVDC bipole link installed by AREVA in 1997.

The new HVDC scheme will be operational in 2012.

“Through this contract, AREVA reinforces its HVDC systems expertise and its commitment to working closely with customers to develop cost-effective solutions for all their energy needs,” said Michel Augonnet, Executive Vice-President for AREVA’s Transmission and Distribution Systems Business Unit.
