On May 26, 2011, the official inauguration of the Tenaga Suria Brunei (TSB) Photovoltaic Power Generation Demonstration Project was held at the TSB site. Japan AE Power Systems Corp. (AE Power) installed the system for Mitsubishi Corp. at the TSB site.

This TSB Demonstration Plant is the first photovoltaic generation project delivered by AE Power. The plant is a joint demonstration project by the government of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Negara Brunei Darussalam and Mitsubishi Corp. in order to identify and evaluate the performance characteristics of each of the six different kinds of photovoltaic panels under local meteorological conditions and determining the best-performing panels for Brunei.

As one of the largest photovoltaic systems in Southeast Asia at 1.2 MW, the system is expected to generate approximately 1,344 MWh of electricity per year. Renewable energy from the sun will power 200 homes, effectively saving the nation approximately 340,000 liters (89,818 gal) of crude oil and reducing carbon-dioxide emissions by 960 tonnes (1,058 tons) per year equivalent to the carbon-dioxide absorption of 260-hectare (642-acre) forest.

AE Power was awarded this project in July 2009 in recognition of its experience in substation construction in Brunei and several other countries. AE Power and its Singaporean subsidiary company, Japan AE Power Systems Asia Pte. Ltd., provided system engineering, such as large-scale photovoltaic system networking, procurement, commissioning and civil/installation work, and completed the construction ahead of schedule in July 2010. It was handed over a few months later in October. Maintenance, support operations and local staff training will continue for the next three years with the support of AE Power. The data accumulated by this project will be used by Brunei Darussalam for future photovoltaic system implementation.
