Jersey Central Power & Light is adding laptop computers to more than 400 line trucks and support vehicles to improve maintenance service and manage repair work more efficiently. The $5 million project is expected to be completed by next spring.
Crews using the new laptop computers will be able to view electronic work orders, instead of writing the information down when radioed or phoned in from the company's dispatching office. The new technology also will display circuit maps of JCP&L's service area as well as the location of other company crews. Additionally, the laptop computers use global positioning technology to provide turn-by-turn directions to work locations.
"This new mobile technology will better serve customers and continues our commitment to provide the quality service they expect and deserve," said Holly Kauffman, JCP&L vice president of operations. "It provides our crews the information they need to make repairs, maintain the system and close out completed projects while on the job."
Several other FirstEnergy utilities are also installing the new computer technology in their trucks, which will give those crews the ability to coordinate and work efficiently with JCP&L crews during storm restoration work.
