As of this morning, over 2,400 LIPA and National Grid crews had restored electric service to over 54 percent of the customers affected by Hurricane Irene.
As of 11:30 a. m., approximately 333,000 of the 523,000 customers who have lost power as a result of the storm had been restored to service.
Restoration crews continue to work on reconnecting customers throughout LIPA’s service territory while safely working around the clock on extended shifts. Ninety-five percent of all LIPA customers are expected to have power restored by Friday night.
LIPA reported on Twitter that the equipment issued for restoration use included 760,000 feet of cable, 2300 crossarms, 713 poles,and 633 transformers. Over 686,000 calls had been received in its Call Center.
The amount of crews include 1,477 high voltage linemen, 824 tree crews and 274 low voltage workers.
Flooded roads, uprooted trees, downed wires and utility poles continue to make restoration efforts challenging for restoration crews in over 4,200 damage locations across Long Island. Crews from utilities as far away as Indiana, Tennessee, and Kansas are assisting LIPA with restoration efforts.
