CESC and Silver Spring Networks to Deploy Smart Energy Network in India

Feb. 11, 2016
IPv6 Smart Energy and Smart City Network Raises the Bar for the Subcontinent, Improves Reliability and Efficiency for the Benefit of Kolkata and Beyond

CESC Limited and Silver Spring Networks has announced a collaboration to deploy an advanced, multi-application smart energy and smart city network in the city of Kolkata, India. Building on the two companies’ successful Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) and Distribution Automation (DA) demonstration project, this collaboration creates a framework to extend Silver Spring’s IPv6 / 6LowPAN networking platform throughout CESC’s service territory. The initial phase of the deployment will connect approximately 25,000 customers and automate CESC’s electricity distribution grid.

Additionally, the parties have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate in offering smart grid and smart city services to other organizations in West Bengal and throughout India. By combining CESC’s demonstrated operational excellence and Silver Spring’s platform, the parties intend to bring the many benefits of networking infrastructure to an even wider segment of the market.

Silver Spring's IPv6 networking technology allows utilities of all sizes to implement a wide range of smart grid applications using a common network platform throughout their service area. Silver Spring has pioneered the adoption of IPv6 networking technology, ensuring interoperability to help deliver higher quality, lower costs, and better overall value for customers and consumers. Silver Spring’s open standards-based platform, built on the IEEE 802.15.4g interoperability protocol (Wi-SUN), integrates with a wide range of products and technologies from numerous global device partners
