RuggedCom Inc. has released new features for the RuggedRouter network router to address specific needs of mission-critical applications, such as those found in substation automation and Smart Grids for electric utilities, intelligent transportation systems, and advanced control and automation for industrial processes.

The new RuggedRouter features include:
  • Cellular Modem Interface: GSM support to allow secure wireless connectivity over a cellular network (other cellular interfaces coming soon).
  • Serial Protocol Support: Modbus and DNP support that “IP-Enables” legacy serial devices.
  • Traffic Control with IEEE802.1p: Control bandwidth for different types of network traffic to ensure mission critical data is properly handled .
  • New Cyber Security features: New access levels, enhanced Radius support, and tight integration with Industrial Defender’s Defense-In-Depth Cyber Security solution.
The RuggedRouter is an industrially hardened network router and cyber security appliance with integrated router, firewall, and VPN functionality. The RuggedRouter is used to create highly reliable wide area networks and provides effective cyber security to secure IP-based local area networks against cyber attack from both internal and external sources. Ideally suited for electric power utilities, the industrial plant floor, and traffic control systems, the RuggedRouter is designed to protect and secure SCADA system networks connected directly to the Internet, or within a company's Wide Area Network (WAN) or Local Area Network (LAN).RuggedRated products: meet or exceed a wide range of industry standards; provide a high level of immunity to electromagnetic interference and heavy electrical surges; feature a wide operating temperature range of -40°C to +85°C (no fans); can be powered from a variety of sources (12VDC, 24VDC, 48VDC, 88-300VDC/35-264VAC); and have high MTBF and reliability characteristics. In addition, for applications requiring high availability, the router provides the option for integrated dual redundant power supplies, which have the unique ability to have each power supply fed from different voltage levels and/or sources. All of these features allow the RuggedRouter products to be placed in almost any location for installation flexibility.
