Envirotemp FR3 Fluid Chosen in Brazil
ITAIPU Transformmadores in conjunction with CPFL, a distribution utility, and B&M, a research and development company, developed an 88-kVA compact distribution transformer, called “green transformer,” in a 45-kVA transformer tank by using the Envirotemp FR3 fluid capability of overloadability and life extension of a paper-insulation system. The green transformer achieved: 95.5% more kVA with the same dimensions of a 45-kVA transformer; 20% weight reduction; lower price/kVA ratio; lower no-load losses and equivalent total losses for the given application; and improved fire and environmental safety margins.
Cooper Power Systems' Envirotemp FR3 fluid is a fire-resistant, natural ester, dielectric coolant formulated from edible vegetable oils for use in distribution and power transformers. Envirotemp FR3 fluid has been marketed in the United States since 1997.
In late 2002, Envirotemp FR3 fluid was introduced to some key Brazilian utilities, transformer manufacturers and service shops, generating high interest from these companies. The high fire point properties and excellent environmental characteristics, in addition to the improved kraft paper-aging performance, provided these companies with a powerful technology to address problems regarding fire concerns, environmental regulatory pressures and aging of substation infrastructure.
