Regulators Approve First Offshore Wind Farm in U.S.
The U.S. Department of the Interior has approved a controversial wind generation project off the coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, U.S.
After nine years of review, the nation's first offshore farm has the green light, and developers of Cape Wind expect to start construction later this year.
The 130 wind turbines will lie in Nantucket Sound, about 5 miles (8 km) from the shore, and cover 24 sq miles (62 sq km). The tip of the highest blade of each turbine would reach 440 ft (134 m) above the water.
Cape Wind has won local and state approvals, but still must secure an agreement for the sale of the power it will generate. Cape Wind is currently negotiating a power purchase agreement with National Grid Plc.
