The University of Idaho, through its College of Engineering’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, is offering the power system protection and relaying certificate to on-campus students and students at a distance via the engineering outreach program. The certificate provides engineers with a concentrated focus on power system protection and relaying.

The certificate consists of 12 credits selected from a list of required courses and electives and must be approved by the certificate coordinator. Students must earn a grade of “B” or better in each course to qualify for the certificate. Coursework may not be more than five years old unless it is being used in conjunction with the completion of a graduate degree, the university stated.

The course list is as follows (all the courses qualify as three credits):

• Power Systems Analysis (required)
• Power System Protection and Relaying (required)
• Communication Systems
• Digital Filtering
• Special Topics (as approved by the coordinator)
• Symmetrical Components
• Transients in Power Systems

Prior to starting the certificate, students must be admitted to the University of Idaho. The prerequisites include:

• A completed undergraduate degree in a related field with a minimum cumulative of 2.8 GPA as approved by the certificate coordinator in consultation with the department chair.
• Graduate students must declare the certificate by submitting a Graduate and Certificate Change of Curriculum form to the department chair for approval.
• Students must contact the certificate coordinator prior to starting the certificate.
