Keeping O'Hare Cool with CAMV
When Chicago, Illinois' O'Hare International Airport needed an upgrade of the control systems for the facility's complex heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment, planners faced a power distribution problem.
In response, Southwire created a special version of its Covered Aerial MV (CAMV) system. This provided a cost-controlling solution that allowed the HVAC systems to keep operating during the major changes to the underground HVAC power distribution system. Southwire's solution fulfilled the project engineers' need for an economical, temporary power feed that could maintain service to the HVAC equipment without expensive underground work.
What O'Hare needed was 5-kV power in a 390-ft (119-m) run. Southwire's solution was to hang UL-rated cables from standard CAMV spacer hardware. The UL-rated cable can enter buildings and go directly into cable trays without expensive termination structures. The CAMV spacer hardware allows multiple circuits on a single pole, delivering high power density in the overhead distribution line. This unique combination from Southwire delivered significant cost savings compared to underground alternatives.
The cable used to solve the problem was a UL-rated 750 kcmil aluminum-conductor non-shielded MV-90 cable. A series of 50-ft (15-m)-high poles carry two circuits. Each circuit uses two 750 kcmil conductors per phase. The CAMV architecture lets all 12 conductors hang from two crossarms on each pole. Each group of three conductors and their spacer hardware are supported on an Alumoweld-Aluminum messenger.
