Palo Alto Signs Up Large Solar Installation
A research-based company in Palo Alto, California, U.S., has applied for the largest solar power system ever to be installed within city limits. Developed and operated by Solar Power Partners (SPP), the 112,000-sq ft (10,405-sq m) photovoltaic system will be mounted on the rooftops of several buildings on the Roche Palo Alto campus and will generate an estimated 1,398,194 kWh in electricity each year with a capacity of 1021 kW dc (879 kW ac).
The system at Roche, a research-focused healthcare group, will be one of the largest privately owned commercial solar power systems in California. When operating at peak capacity, the system will generate enough electricity to power approximately 172 Palo Alto homes. The photovoltaic solar system is expected to be operating by the end of 2008 and has a life expectancy of more than 35 years.
