ALSTOM Repairs Damage to Kosovan Power Plant
An ALSTOM-led consortium has successfully completed a €10.9 million project to restart unit 2 of the fire-damaged Kosovo B power plant. In partnership with Innogy (United Kingdom), ALSTOM replaced the plant's control room and electrical distribution systems, which were damaged by fire after a thunderstorm in July.
ALSTOM's Power Sector (Paris, France) was charged with supplying, installing and commissioning a new soft desk control room. Innogy conducted a detailed analysis for the electrical network and was responsible for the design, engineering and installation of the necessary switchgear and cables for the 6.3-kV and 0.4-kV electrical distribution. ALSTOM's Transmission and Distribution Sector supplied and installed two medium-voltage switchboards, a 1600-kVA transformer and a low-voltage switchboard.
Beginning in late August, ALSTOM installed screens and eight Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) computers that process all the information received from around the plant. The new equipment controls the boiler, the auxiliary system, the steam turbine, the generator, power evacuation, the mechanical balance of plant and all systems needed to achieve the required output at the plant.
Workers at the Kosovo plant were trained by Innogy at power stations in the United Kingdom and then on site by ALSTOM in how to use the new control room equipment. Innogy provided operational assistance and support to Kosovan utility KEK during the commissioning phase.
