AREVA T&D Wins Contract for U.K.'s First High-Voltage Offshore Substation
The Kellogg Brown & Root/Vestas Celtic Wind Technology Ltd. consortium awarded AREVA T&D a contract to design, manufacture and install the United Kingdom's first offshore high-voltage substation, and to design the entire electrical connection between the Barrow offshore wind farm and the national power grid.
The Barrow project requires a compact and weight-saving high-voltage substation able to operate in severe weather conditions. The substation will be located on a platform close to the Vestas wind turbines northwest of England. The onshore connection will be at United Utilities' existing Heysham Substation, making the Barrow project one of the few U.K. wind farms with a direct high-voltage connection.
The 90-MW project will help the U.K. government achieve its goal of having 15% of the country's electricity production derived from renewable energy sources by 2015. The entire electrical connection and offshore substation will be completed in 14 months and will be delivered in November 2005.
