Brazil: AREVA T&D to Build Biomass Power Plants
AREVA's T&D division was awarded a contract for 16.6-million euros to build two biomass power plants in Paraná, Brazil. Under the scope of the contract, AREVA T&D will also connect the two plants to the electricity distribution grid. The turnkey contract is with CCC Machinery, a subsidiary of the German trade house company, Münchmeyer Petersen.
The state of Paraná, located in southern Brazil, is ideal for biomass power plants, as it has many wood industries whose woody residues can be used as a source of electricity generation. The two 12.3-MW biomass plants will be fueled with the leftover sawdust, bark and waste generated by the many furniture factories in the area.
The project will form part of Brazil's renewable energy incentive program, PROINFA, and will contribute to the government's objective of having 10% of the country's electricity generated from clean energy sources by 2022.
The two biomass power plants will be operational by February and June 2006.
