Canada: ALSTOM Wins HVDC Transformer Contract
Manitoba Hydro (Winnipeg, Manitoba) awarded ALSTOM an order for three high-voltage direct current (HVDC) converter transformers.
Manitoba Hydro generates 95% of its electricity from hydro-electric resources and 75% is from the Nelson River System. The HVDC converter transformers will reinforce and expand the capacity of power transfer by HVDC transmission lines between northern Manitoba, where the generating stations are, to southern Manitoba, where the electricity is either distributed locally or transmitted to neighboring Canadian provinces and U.S. states.
Two 310 MVA 500-kV 3-phase HVDC converter transformers will go to the Henday Converter Station in northern Manitoba and a 292 MVA, 500-kV 3-phase HVDC converter transformer will be delivered to the Dorsey Converter Station in the south of the province.
