India's Oldest Power Provider Goes High-Tech
Tata Power Co. Ltd. (TPCL; Mumbai, India), India's oldest and largest private generating and distributing company, has upgraded its Jojobera Power Plant with an ION® enterprise energy management system from Power Measurement (Saanichton, BC Canada).
Located in Jamshedpur, the automated Jojobera Power Plant distributes the bulk of its 300-MW power to nearby industrial customers, such as Tata Steel, and occasionally sells excess electricity to other power distributors. To maximize the benefits of a recent expansion, Tata Power installed a network of 45 ION intelligent energy meters at all key generation and distribution points.
High-accuracy energy meters were chosen to monitor each feeder and, through fault recording, improve reliability and reduce power outages across the facility. ION Enterprise
The ION energy management system monitors each of the three generators independently, and presents the station's combined power production and auxiliary consumption via networked workstations in real-time, as well as automatically generating custom reports.
According to Purushottam Thakur, senior manager, electrical and operations, the ION system has helped to identify power-quality problems, reduce related outages and improve reporting accuracy throughout the facility. “The ION system monitors the generators, controls the status of our switchyard equipment, and provides detailed energy reports every month, day and shift, making it easy for us to track energy-related events,” said Thakur. “It helps us to maintain a reliable source of quality power while keeping costs and schedules on track.”
