Texas Utility Improves Grid Reliability with D-VAR

Rayburn Country Electric Cooperative (Rockwall, Texas, U.S.) has purchased two D-VAR^™ dynamic voltage-compensation systems from American Superconductor Corp. (AMSC; Westborough, Massachusetts) to prevent voltage collapse and delay costly transmission additions.

Rayburn will use the two D-VAR systems to mitigate voltage stability problems on a 138-kV transmission grid serving 26,000 customers. GE Industrial Systems will provide engineering, installation, capacitors and other system components for the turnkey solution. The units should be operational by June 1, 2003.
