A consortium between VA TECH Transmission & Distribution S.A. (France) and VA TECH Transmission & Distribution Co. Ltd. (Thailand) has been awarded a gas insulated switchgear (GIS) contract for four 115/24-kV turnkey substations in Bangkok/Thailand for the power utility Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA).

This is the second contract MEA has awarded VA TECH T&D is recent weeks. Both contracts comprise the latest technology of TH7m with 18 bays 115-kV GIS, 74 bays 24-kV GIS, the complete control and protection equipment, as well the entire electrical and mechanical balance of the plant.

The contract also includes the installation, supervision and commissioning of the four substations. Scheduled delivery time is between 11 and 14 months plus four months for installation. These four substations are part of MEA's ambitious power development plan to cope with the high power demand growth of approximately 8% per year. After being put into service, these new substations will strengthen the distribution network in the outskirts of Bangkok.

In related news, VA TECH T&D also won a contract for the construction of two 170-kV indoor switchgear for Turkish Electric Transmission AS (TEIAS), Ankara.

The substation “Haskòy” will be built to the north of Ankara City toward the Esenbogna airport and will be used for the local supply of power to this fast-growing residential area, and the industrial zone of small and medium-sized businesses set up recently.

The “Semikler” project is based at Izmir and will make a major contribution to the energy supply for the expanding tourism industry in the Izmir area, and guarantee power for local industry.

Both substations have been awarded as turnkey projects and include not only planning of the entire electrotechni-cal equipment but also construction, installation and commissioning.
