ALSTOM has won a Euro 60 million contract to build one of the largest high-voltage substations in the Persian Gulf region. The 400-kV turnkey gas-insulated substation will be built by ALSTOM's Transmission & Distribution Sector (Eddystone, Pennsylvania, U.S.) for the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA; Jebel Ali, Dubai, UAE).

The contract follows the successful completion of another project for DEWA won by ALSTOM for 400-kV gas-insulated switchgear installed at Jebel Ali. Both projects are part of DEWA's expansion of power and desalination capability in Dubai.

The new substation will include 19 bays of ALSTOM's T155 gas-insulated switchgear, 4 km (2.5 miles) of 400-kV gas-insulated bus ducts and the company's Space 2000 protection and digital control system. ALSTOM will organize all civil works, engineering, project management, auxiliary equipment and erection and commissioning aspects of the project.

ALSTOM signed the contract in May and the project should be completed by December 2004.
