Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories has signed a multiyear substation automation contract valued at US$71.5 million with the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP). SEL will supply project management, engineering services, software and hardware to enhance the performance of the electric power grid owned and operated by LADWP.

The overall project involves updating more than 100 substations that have already been automated as well as retrofitting more than 75 substations that still require automation. SEL's project manager, Herbert Cheung, said that the project includes well-structured performance milestones and will span up to seven years.
