ABB (Raleigh, North Carolina), a power and automation technology group, has completed the $4.5-million installation of a 69-kV gas-insulated substation (GIS) design project for the Southern California Public Power Authority (SCPPA). Burbank Water and Power is the host utility for the project, called the Magnolia Power Project, and this is ABB's fifth GIS to be located in Burbank, California.
Burbank Water & Power supports an influential and demanding customer base, including many of the major motion picture studios such as Disney, Warner Bros. and NBC. Three of the five ABB GISs are located on studio property and blend in with neighboring buildings.
The Magnolia Power Project is constructed on approximately four acres of Burbank Water & Power's existing generating station site and will further improve regional electric reliability by increasing the amount of local generation that is not dependent on interstate transmission lines. Six cities from SCPPA participated in the project, including Anaheim, Burbank, Cerritos, Colton, Glendale and Pasadena.
