S&C Announces VAR Compensation System Projects
S&C Electric Co. has announced two VAR compensation system projects using S&C's PureWave DSTATCOM distributed static compensator. PureWave DSTATCOM provides the reactive power that's needed to compensate for the variable output of renewable energy plants. It uses S&C's proven power electronics technology to offer extremely rapid response time. Its modular design allows quick installation and can control mechanically switched capacitor or reactor banks for cost-effective voltage regulation over wide swings in system conditions.
AGL Energy Ltd., Australia's largest private owner, operator and developer of renewable generation, as well as the owner of the 63-MW AGL Oaklands Hill Wind Farm in Victoria, Australia, awarded Suzlon Energy Australia a turnkey contract for delivery of the wind farm. Suzlon Energy Australia subsequently awarded S&C an order for a PureWave DSTATCOM distributed static compensator for the wind farm. The system will allow the wind plant to meet strict grid code requirements for supply of reactive power as well as voltage-control requirements.
Additionally, S&C has been awarded an order for a PureWave DSTATCOM to be deployed at the 150-MW Goat Mountain Wind Ranch near San Angelo, Texas, developed and owned by Edison Mission Energy. S&C will provide engineering, procurement and construction services for the system as well.
