ABB's Coral Springs, Florida, facility has begun the production of the ABB Relion 615 series ANSI-based distribution protection relays.

ABB's Coral Springs, Florida, facility has begun the production of the Relion 615 series ANSI-based distribution protection relays. This is a major milestone not only for ABB in North America but also for its Distribution Automation business.

This Relion family of ANSI products had been manufactured in ABB facilities in Finland since 2008. With the production of the first U.S.-made units, as of June 25, ABB confirmed its commitment to protection relay customers, specifically those in North America and other ANSI markets around the world.

For several decades now, the ABB Distribution Automation business in Coral Springs has manufactured electromechanical, solid-state and microprocessor relays as well as the Flexitest line of test switches. With the addition of the Relion 615 series, the plant manufacturing capabilities have now been expanded to cover all distribution protection and control.

Relion is ABB’s family of products for power systems protection, control, measurement and supervision of substation design. The Relion 615 series ANSI product line includes devices for protection and control of feeders, motors and transformers.

To make this product transfer successful, a multi-cultural project team was assembled with personnel from different corners of the world. This team worked together for several months to solve many challenges along the way.

As part of this transfer, members of the operations, quality assurance and engineering departments in Coral Springs have been properly trained on the processes, advanced testing technologies and the Relion product to ensure the quality of the U.S.-made Relion 615 series ANSI relays.
