Designing Energy Services for Commercial and Industrial Customers

Over the past year, technology advances and high energy prices have stimulated interest in Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI). Discussions are wide-ranging. Some focus globally: Australian and Canadian “smart metering”, new European Union requirements, the results of time-of-use pilots that arose in the wake of California’s deregulation debacle.

S&C Upgrades Protection and Coordination Assistant

S&C has upgraded Coordinaide — The S&C Protection and Coordination Assistant. This application tool has been upgraded to improve the look and feel of the user interface and to include several new TCC curves. It is available on the S&C Website.

Coordinaide includes the full spectrum of electrical devices (e.g., transformers, capacitor units, conductors and cables, motors etc.) protected by S&C equipment. The online library of TCC curve data is extensive; there are more than 8000 individual curves in the database. With Coordinaide, users can easily select the optimal S&C fuse, TripSaver Dropout Recloser, or Vista Underground Distribution Switchgear TCC curve that will:

  • Protect transformers against damaging overcurrents and coordinate with primary- and secondary-side protective devices. See how S&C’s novel Transformer Protection Index can be used to determine if the primary fuse will protect against secondary-side faults, including arcing phase-to-ground secondary-side faults.
  • Protect capacitor units against case rupture.
  • Protect underground cables from insulation damage due to excessive temperatures.
  • Protect overhead conductors from damage due to annealing.
  • Coordinate with “R-Rated” motor-starter fuses to avoid unnecessary power outages.
  • Selectively coordinate two or more devices in series to minimize service interruptions.

The following features have been added or upgraded:

  • The user interface has been updated to give it a more modern look and feel.
  • The database of TCC curves has been expanded. Additions include:
    • Onderdonk Melting and Soares Annealing TCC curves for copper overhead conductors
      1. Cooper (McGraw) NX Companion Fuses
      2. Cooper (RTE) High Amp ELSP and Mini ELSP Fuses
    • Current-limiting fuse TCC curves for:
      1. ABB DPU 2000 (Microprocessor Relay)
      2. Basler BE1-700C (Microprocessor Relay)
      3. IEEE C37.112
    • Cooper (RTE) High Amp ELSP and Mini ELSP Fuses
      1. Relayed circuit breaker (overcurrent relay) TCC curves for:
    • The help file now includes reference formulas (and their sources) for “devices” having equation-based TCCs. “Devices” with reference formulas include overhead conductors, underground cables, incident-arc energy curves, relayed circuit breakers, and the overcurrent control used in S&C Vista Underground Distribution Switchgear.

Coordinaide’s opening page contains a brief description of the protection applications Coordinaide is designed to handle. If you launch the program you will be directed to a second page that contains a short “Conditions of Use” disclaimer. This is followed by a note detailing the minimum Web browser requirements and a link to a “User Guide.” Once you have read and agreed to accept the Conditions of Use, one final click will launch the program.
