Designing Energy Services for Commercial and Industrial Customers

Over the past year, technology advances and high energy prices have stimulated interest in Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI). Discussions are wide-ranging. Some focus globally: Australian and Canadian “smart metering”, new European Union requirements, the results of time-of-use pilots that arose in the wake of California’s deregulation debacle.

GE Adds Line Differential to Universal Relay Platform

GE Digital Energy has announced the Multilin L30 Line Differential System, which delivers cost-effective current differential protection for high-speed, sub-transmission and distribution lines and cables. The newest member of GE Digital Energy’s industry-leading Universal Relay (UR) platform of protection and control devices, the L30 offers utilities sophisticated protection, comprehensive communications, embedded IEC 61850 process bus support, and advanced metering and synchrophasor monitoring.

Based on the highly successful Multilin L90 Line Current Differential System, the L30 is equipped with advanced sensitive and segregated line differential protection and a full suite of integrated back-up protection, making it a cost-effective option, particularly for medium-voltage underground cables. The L30 is IEC 61850-compliant and offers comprehensive, enhanced communications capabilities including support for the new Multilin HardFiber System Process Bus Solution, which provides bi-directional IEC 61850 fiber optic communications, using GOOSE messaging, directly to the primary switchyard. With programmable logic to build custom control applications, the L30 delivers seamless communications and interoperability, eliminating the need for point-to-point wiring and auxiliary devices.

Adhering to the latest in security compliance, the L30 includes added features for the highest levels of device and system security. It creates a robust network security while enabling critical infrastructure protection with Dual Permission Access Control and User Command Logging.

The L30 is the only sub-transmission differential relay supporting synchrophasors and conforms to IEEE C37.118 standards for synchrophasor streaming over Ethernet. It includes high-accuracy metering and recording for all AC signals, detailed disturbance and event recording, and advanced device health diagnostics. With these features, the L30 significantly reduces the time needed for postmortem analysis of power system events and the creation of regulatory reports.
