PSEG Power Conducts Utility Location Study
PSEG Power LLC (Newark, New Jersey, U.S.) needed to know what utilities were situated under the ground at 11 separate locations on a busy road adjacent to its facility in northern New Jersey. Originally, PSEG considered using a vacuum excavation truck to cut holes in the ground and identify each utility one by one. Knowing it would have to make so many excavations on a highly trafficked road, PSEG opted for an alternate approach.
Utility Survey Corp. (Westwood, New Jersey) proposed undertaking a utility location survey using Ground Penetrating Radar and Electro-Magnetic Pipe/Cable locators. These instruments are non-intrusive and highly portable, enabling the work crew to operate without shutting down sections of the roadway for lengthy periods of time.
According to Utility Survey Corp., unless PSEG needed specific physical spot utility information (size, material and diameter), there was little or no need to use excavation methods. After Utility Survey Corp. completed the location survey, and updated the project CAD drawings with the new utility information, PSEG had all the information it was looking for, in less time, with minimal disruption and for less cost.
