What cost effective strategies are available to storm harden the electric system against tree-caused faults?

Got a utility vegetation management question? Goose the Moose!

Ground Rules for Questions

The topic area is utility vegetation management. Stick to that or face possible ridicule for your inability to read.

What Do We Need Beyond Your Question

  • Send your question to goosethemoose@ecosync.com. When I've answered your question you'll receive an email with a link to my video response.
  • I'd like to know something about you. For example, if you work for an electric utility or a VM contractor, tell me so. If you work for a regulatory commission, tell me that. If you're a municipal arborist let me know. If you're a member of the public, a ratepayer, etc. then state that. By knowing this information I can tailor the answer to the questioner. For example, if you work for a utility or one of its contractors, I can expect you know electrical hardware and know you are not confusing cable or a service drop with primary conductors. If you are an arborist then there are terms I can use with you that would not serve in answering a question from the public.

Win Stuff- Stump or Stun the Moose

Stump the Moose with your utility VM question or stun the Moose with the brilliance of your question and you will become the proud owner of an exceedingly rare, highly prized "Goose the Moose" T-shirt.

Oh, by the way, the Moose shall be the arbiter of who merits a T-shirt. There is no method of appeal and whining will be exposed for the entertainment of all participants. I know the desire for a coveted Goose the Moose T-shirt will make it difficult to restrain yourself. But come on, retain your dignity. There is no limit to the number of questions you may ask to qualify yourself for a prize. However, the Moose is not obligated to answer all questions nor is he obligated to take your questions seriously.

Question from Glenn in Maine: I am looking for justification, i.e. studies, cost/benefit analysis, resources to defend my use of herbicides in my distribution line clearance program.  I am not looking for the environmental hazards, etc. with the use of herbicides but rather how herbicides can reduce the long term cost of the distribution line clearance cycle.

Question From Sara in NH: What are cost effective strategies if any, available to decrease future storm damage. What is the range of possible gains and what does it cost? Can the VM program actually limit major storm damage?

Question from Gregory in Pamona, CA: How effective has the use of LiDAR been in enhancing UVM programs? Is it working, or are utilities overwhelmed with the amount of data that can be collected? Or is it too early to tell?

Keep Power Flowing With Fewer Retreatments
Controlling vegetation in utility rights of way to meet Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) guidelines can be an added strain on tight maintenance budgets. One way to maximize crew productivity and stretch budgets is to adopt an integrated vegetation management (IVM) program that includes selective herbicide treatments for effective long-lasting weed and brush control with fewer return visits.

Maintain Utility and Industrial Site Safety With Reliable Brush Control
Utility and industrial site safety can be maintained with effective brush control by DuPont™ Viewpoint® and Streamline® herbicides. Viewpoint® helps create safer utility sites and rights of way by providing reliable control of hard-to-manage brush species. Streamline® provides effective brush control in areas where desirable grasses should be maintained. Click here to watch video.

DuPont Crop Protection: 10 Brush Control Tips to Enhance Site Safety and Power Reliability
