The Business Case for Integrated Volt/Var Control – IVVC

Utilities can manage distribution system voltage and var flow to reduce demand and energy consumption, and achieve significant energy savings while maintaining customer voltage power quality per established standards. The business benefits are a greater percentage of energy delivered to paying customers, deferment in investment in peaking generation plants and charges, and a reduction in the environmental impact of energy delivery.

Arizona Public Service IVVC Smart Distribution Project: The business case for conservation voltage reduction is complex. Utilities save on the cost of fuel and emissions, and additional peak generation. Customers pay less for their electricity. The Distribution system is operated more efficiently. The purpose of Arizona Public Service project is to substantiate the operational benefits of 24/7 Demand Management through Integrated Voltage Var Control: Managing Voltage and VARs in the distribution system to settable targets while maintaining service level voltages within their power quality requirements. This presentation will provide an overview into the Arizona Public Service Smart Distribution project, the scope of the project, project challenges, and project results.

Learn more as our speakers, Dan Arden, global product director distribution automation, Cooper Power Systems, Deborah Sapp, senior program manager, Arizona Public Service, and Andrew Hanson, subject matter expert, Structure Group, discuss:

  • Delivering energy while minimizing losses and power factor penalties/costs.
  • Supporting Conservation Voltage Reduction (CVR) events.
  • Implementation of the Cooper Power Systems Yukon™ volt/var management software
  • Results of the APS volt/var management pilot project.
