At its most basic, electrical power cable is thought to be a conductor, insulation and an overall jacket or shield. Yet cable engineering is a complex process that involves both electrical and mechanical engineering and other sciences such as physics, chemistry and metallurgy. Because of the rigor and breadth of electrical engineering programs today, little, if any, time is devoted to the study of power cable. Specifying a power cable for a particular project can be very involved. There are a number of important considerations that have long term implications for the reliability of the circuit. Here is a brief discussion of several key design issues.
