G&W Electric Co., a global supplier of electric power equipment since 1905, donated a Viper-ST Recloser to Northeast Wisconsin Technical College in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
The Viper-ST Recloser will be used for the college’s electric utility apprentice programs as well as for its nine-month line worker vocational program.
“We are thrilled to be able to provide Northeast Wisconsin Technical College and its students with this donation to give those in the apprenticeship program hands-on experience and training,” said John Mueller, Chairman and Owner of G&W Electric. “The Viper-ST Recloser is a critical piece of equipment for our nation’s electrical infrastructure and this hands-on experience will help these students expand their knowledge as they prepare to enter the workforce.”
Northeast Wisconsin Technical College has two electric utility apprenticeships, line workers and substation electricians. It is the only technical college in Wisconsin to offer a Substation Electrician Apprenticeship. The recloser will be programmed with a power system simulator which will be used to simulate various power system fault conditions.
“Our students and faculty are so grateful for this donation by G&W Electric as it allows us to provide students with new, meaningful work experience in the classroom that wasn’t possible before,” said Tim Murphy, instructor of Electric Utility Apprenticeship program, Northeast Wisconsin Technical College in Green Bay Wisconsin. “Our program takes pride in providing realistic hands-on training equipment for our students and this donation will be an integral part of these programs.”
The apprenticeship offers students the opportunity to enhance their skills, enabling them to inspect and maintain electrical substations. Coursework introduces students to a basic understanding of the theories, process, systems and equipment used in electrical substations.
